Standards For Marine Surveyor

Instructor: Pat Kearns

A surveyor's report is filled with opinions and sometimes they are challenged with "why," "how come" and "who said?" The surveyor often must justify a recommendation with support from a third party source, e.g., USCG requirements, a published standard from ABYC or other standards' source or simply explain the rationale for a recommendation based on experience, accepted practice or plain common sense. This course is the place to learn which standards apply where and when and to gain insight as to why the standard is written the way it is, along with some of the subtleties of origination and interpretation. It's also the course to making sure your standards' references are appropriate to resolving a problem. Surveyors who cite a standard, code or requirement that is "off base" risk a loss of professional credibility and can create unpleasant public relations problems when their clients are faced with confusing or inaccurate compliance issues of insurance coverage or prospective purchasers to say little of the need to defend their own words. Find your "leg to stand on" and make sure your quotable quotes are in the right place at the right time.
